Why work with a CPA instead of software
Software is good at arithmetic. It's not good at asking the questions that change the answer: whether your business should be an S corporation, whether that 1099-B shows the right basis, whether you're paying tax to two states on the same income. We review your situation, not just your forms.
What to bring
- Last year's federal and state returns (new clients)
- W-2s, 1099s (including 1099-B, 1099-DA, 1099-NEC and 1099-K) and K-1s
- Mortgage interest, property tax and charitable contribution records
- Business income and expenses, or access to your bookkeeping
- Any IRS or state notices you received during the year
Everything is shared through our secure client portal, so there's no need to drop off paper.
Deadlines and extensions
Individual returns are generally due April 15. An extension (Form 4868) gives you until October 15 to file, but not more time to pay: tax owed is still due in April, and interest and penalties run on unpaid amounts. Partnership and S corporation returns are generally due March 15.
Frequently asked questions
How much does tax preparation cost?
It depends on the complexity of your return: the number of states, businesses, investments and special situations such as crypto or equity compensation. We'll quote a fee after a short consultation, before any work begins.
Do you prepare returns for clients outside New Jersey and New York?
Yes. We work with clients nationwide through our secure portal, phone and video calls.
Can you file my return if I'm late or haven't filed in years?
Yes. See our page on unfiled tax returns. The sooner you file, the sooner penalties stop growing and the more options you have.
Does an extension give me more time to pay?
No. An extension gives you more time to file, not to pay. Estimate and pay what you owe by the original deadline to limit interest and penalties.
